The 2016 release of “It Ends With Us”, sparks in readers after a film was made in the summer of 2024. Author Colleen Hoover has been trying to make a movie on her successful novel for years. Now that they are both available, people are able to compare and contrast between the two.
Book Summary
The book takes place in Boston where Lily Bloom moves there to pursue her dream of becoming a business owner. When she meets handsome neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, the two begin to fall deeply in love. As their connection grows, Lily begins to see a side of Ryle that reminds her of the abusive relationship her parents had. But when Lily’s first love Atlas Corrigan, unexpectedly shows up in her life again. This makes her relationship with Ryle take a sudden turn that is completely opposite of her previous relationship.
Book Opinion
When I finished this book I knew instantly it had become one of my favorites. I’m not much of a bookworm but this book specifically caught my attention due to how popular it is. It is just so shocking how such a charming guy can become so violent. When reading the book It almost felt like I was Lily Bloom and had felt her emotions of anger, guilt, and manipulation. The book is written in a way that makes the readers feel that they are part of it and even in it themselves. As you read it, you could feel all the same emotions as Lily.
There is a specific scene where Ryle pushes Lily out of abuse down a flight of stairs. When she regains consciousness he manipulates her into thinking that she had just tripped and fell. When I read this part of the book I had even been uncertain if he had really pushed her. I even had to go back and read the section to make sure I was correct. It makes the audience question the characters actions making them feel a part of the story line. I also like a book that has action all throughout it. I tend to get bored very quickly if it doesn’t draw me in instantly. This book is the complete opposite of that which is why I love it so much. The emotional execution overall of this is absolutely phenomenal. Hoover truly did an amazing job of showcasing just that.
Movie Opinion
The newly released film of “It Ends With Us” has brought attention from the original readers. Lily Bloom is played by the winning actress Blake Lively. As where Justin Baldoni plays Ryle Kincaid. In my personal opinion, I felt that the actors were too old to play the roles. Characters in that book are supposed to be in their mid 20s and the actors that play them are nearly twice that age. I think that another set of actors would have fit the characters better.
I also feel that the movie was not as dramatic and emotional as the book. The producers of this movie changed and even left out key parts that were in the book. I felt that this caused the movie to weaken as it was not the exact same as the book. As emotional as it was, it did not give me that same feeling I had while reading the book. The book also had more details in it, making room for it to be better liked. For what it was, I liked it overall and it was still a great movie. But at the same time, I have to say I was expecting a little more from it.
Overall
I feel that reading and watching “It Ends With Us” has some great benefits to it especially for a teenage audience. It introduces the issue of physical and psychological abuse in a relationship. By teens reading this book, they can see what an abusive relationship looks like. This way they can understand the dangers of an abusive relationship and what signs to look for if they believe they are in one. By reading this it can save them from trauma.
